Born in 1597, Saint Jean de Brebeuf was a French Jesuit missionary who travelled to Canada, which was then known as New France in 1625. Saint Jean worked primarily with the Huron Indians. For the rest of his life he learned their language and culture. Saint Brebeuf and several other missionaries were captured by the Iroquois when they raided a Huron village. Together with the Huron captives, Saint Jean de Brebeuf was tortured and killed on March 16th, 1649. He was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church in 1930.
