Calasaz was born in 1557 and is also known as Joseph Calasanctius. He was a Spanish Catholic educator and priest and was founder of the Pious Schools, to provide free education to the sons of the poor. Calasanz was founder of the religious order commonly known as the Piarists. He is honored as a saint and declared by Pope Pious XII to be the universal patron of all Christian popular schools in the world.
